What is EPR?

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging, the Government requires businesses to be responsible and contribute to disposal costs for the packaging they place on the UK market at the end of its life.

EPR applies when a business’ annual turnover exceeds £1 million, and it handles or supplies over 25 tonnes of packaging in a calendar year.

  • Small Producers have either an annual turnover between £1m & £2m, and more than 25 tonnes of packaging handled in a calendar year or an annual turnover over £1m and between 25 and 50 tonnes of packaging handled or supplied in a calendar year. They have annual reporting obligations. Their first reporting period is January to December 2023. Submissions for this period will be accepted from January 2024.
  • Large Producers exceed both £2m annual turnover and more than 50 tonnes of packaging handled or supplied in a calendar year. Their first EPR reporting period is January to June 2023. Submissions for this period will be accepted from July and must be with the regulator by 1st October 2023. They will be required to report six-monthly.

The government is developing a new registration portal for EPR, called Report Packaging Data (RPD). The Regulations come into force on the 30th of June 2023 and the portal is not yet visible.
